Butterflies 蝶 (2022) are two particle systems simulating butterflies in abstract and comparatively more realistic ways, written in vanilla javascript and powered by glitch. They are completely generated by the computer without any digital visual inputs.

Inspired by Daniel Shiffman’s Butterfly Wings and the Chinese love story Butterfly Lovers.

Ephemeral

Ephemeral (2022) is a butterfly generator made by Leslie Zeng.  It is an extension from Leslie’s previous work Butterflies. The website will generate a random butterfly when it is loaded or refreshed. Players can adjust the size, shape, and hue color of the butterfly.

The game, or more precisely the experience, is a metaphor that signifies the shortness and non-possession of life. We can customize it but we never own it.
